“C” stands for culling. Yep, you read right. We finally got the chance to finish culling our 7 roos, and they are now dressed and waiting for the freezer and then dinner. They each dressed out anywhere from 3 lb 14 oz to 5 lb 6 oz! That’s a lot of chicken! And I’ve got the battle scar to show that I did each and every one of them! One of them slipped and I managed to stab the palm of my hand at the base of my thumb. OUCH! But, the deed is done, and we’ll work on getting ready for the next batch! It’s not something that I would want to do all the time, but every so often is not too bad. I didn’t take photos because it’s a little too graphic. But I could take pics of the finished product, I guess. Anyway, now I’m tired and ready to call it a day!
Farm Life
My Chicks Are Here!!!
They did finally hatch! They started late Sunday night and continued on through to Tuesday. Unfortunately, only 13 hatched and are alive and well. Two others hatched, but died. The others did not hatch at all. But, with all the temp spikes, power outages, and being scrambled by the post office in delivery, I was not very surprised.
For those of you who have never seen a chick hatch, it’s really amazing (and it tries your patience! LOL). It’s amazing what God can do:
Here’s some pics of all of them after they have fluffed up!
They are so sweet! It’s kind of nice having little chicks around again, even if they’re making another mess for me to have to clean! LOL
And the waiting begins…………
Today, is the day. I received the hatching eggs I ordered on Saturday, and today is the day that they go in the incubator. I ordered a dozen Blue/Black/Splash Orpington eggs. The lady I ordered them from sent 14, but the USPS decided to play kickball with my box and crushed it in on one side. Thankfully, I managed to only lose one so far. I’m not sure how the other 13 will fair, but we’ll see what happens over the next 3 weeks. I also set 17 of my own Buff Orpington eggs for a total of 30 eggs that I hope to hatch. It’s going to be an egg-citing, but long, 21 days of waiting!
Here they are:
Let the waiting begin!!!!
