Free Kindle Books (09/02/12)

Here are a few free Kindle’ target=_blank>Kindle books that I thought would be worth mentioning to my readers:

I can definitely tell it’s school time again…

I can’t believe it’s been a month since I last posted.  Our school year is now in full swing and I can sure tell it!  We’ve also started Awana at church, as well as our homeschool co-op classes, so I’ve really been busy here lately.

For us, we also had our annual county fair.  Unfortunately, the rain cancelled the first 2 days of the fair, and we were too busy the rest of the week to get to go except for a brief period one day.  We did manage to get our entries turned it.  We, as a family, did not do as well this year as last year, but we all still had fun.  One of Melia’s photos won first place in its category, and my afghan that I entered won first place!  I’ve won 2 years in a row!  I’ve never really won much in my life, and this year’s win was unexpected.  But, I’m very thankful for it!  It was a round ripple afghan that I had made a couple of years ago for Melia.  I’ll find a pic and post it for you.

I also had my 35th birthday this month.  I am so blessed to have had 35 birthdays!  I pray that God will allow me to be blessed with many, many more birthdays!

The down side to this month is that I managed to catch a nice little cold that seems like it wants to linger for quite a while.  It always seems that when I need to slow down or de-stress, God always seems to have to get my attention by sending a nice little “bug” my way.  Hmm.  I wonder what that says about my stubbornness?  But, I have managed to get in quite a bit of crochet time, which has been  nice.  I’ve almost completed the required amount of squares I need to for my Log Cabin Afghan.  When I finally finish it, I’ll post pictures for you!

Oh!  I also had a “duh” moment a few days ago!  Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my Kindle.  Well, I figured out that I could add my favorite patterns to it in PDF form!  How cool is that?!  This will really be a big help when we’re on the road and I want to take my crochet with me and end up misplacing my pattern.  (Yes, I have done this before).  So, now I have a library of my favorite patterns on my Kindle so that I can take them with me everywhere I go!  Just another reason to fall more deeply in love with my Kindle

Well, that about sums up what my family has been up to.  I’m trying to get back to posting on a more regular basis, but it always seems like when I think of something to blog about, I’m no where near my computer and, when I am, I forget what I was thinking about before.  I know that I need to keep a pad of paper with me, but I never can seem to remember to do that either!  Maybe one of these days I’ll remember!  Look for another update soon (I hope!).

Book Review: “Don’t Make Me Come Up There” by Kristen Welch

I managed to pick this one up for my Kindle’ target=_blank>Kindle  last week, and I have really enjoyed it, and I can soooo relate to a lot of what she has written. I love her open and upfront honesty about her life and family.  And I especially love how she tells about her faith and how God helped her to grow, even in the most difficult circumstances.  I know that God has also taught me several lessons through the years through my children, and I’m sure that I still have many more to learn.
If you’re looking for a book for moms by a REAL mom (by real, I mean down-to-earth-tell-it-like-it-is-and-not-sugar-coat-it mom),you’ll really enjoy this book.  It’s one that you can pick up and read an excerpt that closely matches your particular situation and not only not feel alone anymore, but you will also have a scripture reference and short prayer to go with it.
Kristen Welch is the author of the blog We Are THAT Family, which I love reading. I believe that God really has a lot in store for this family, especially Kristen.
Here’s what Amazon has to say:
Product Description

A calm moment is a rare find in a mom’s chaotic day. But she needs it. She needs the moment to refocus and refresh her soul. She needs the inspiration to find God in the mess and the mundane that often defines her. She craves the solitude of a moment with the Master to quiet the storms. She needs to laugh and remember why she loves being a mom.
Don’t Make Me Come Up There!  is filled with inspirational and hilarious true-life stories and reflections written by a very human mom. Moms will recognize themselves in the pages of this book written for real, everyday mothers who know what it’s like to catch vomit with one hand while starting a load of laundry with the other (and never confusing the two!). The fifty-two reflections encourage moms to revel in the everyday beauty of their lives and grow closer to God through it all.

"I couldn’t help thinking of the last time my children had scattered up the stairs and disappeared into a quiet abyss. Initially, I thought they were just delighting in one another’s company, holding hands, and making paper daisies. But that thought lasted for 1.2 seconds before I snapped out of my delusion only to discover my oldest giving her brother a “haircut” and my youngest smearing soap all over the bathroom. . . " from the book

Book Review: A Stray Drop of Blood

I have not read a book that captured me like this one did in a very long time.  It is well worth the $2.99 Kindle price tag.
I will admit that I am not one that is easily brought to tears, but this book really touched me.   It is a story told of a young woman set around the time that Jesus Christ is crucified, and it tells how Jesus’ death profoundly changed her life.
Product Description from Amazon:
Beautiful is a dangerous thing to be when one is unprotected.
For seven years, Abigail has been a slave in the Visibullis house. With a Hebrew mistress and a Roman master, she has always been more family than servant . . . until their son returns to Jerusalem after his years in Rome. Within a few months Jason has taken her to his bed and turned her world upside down. Maybe, given time, she can come to love him as he says he loves her. But how does she open her heart to the man who ruined her?
Israel’s unrest finds a home in her bosom, but their rebellion tears apart her world. Death descends with Barabbas’s sword, and Abigail is determined to be there when the criminal is punished. But when she ventures to the trial, Barabbas is not the one the crowd calls to crucify. Instead, it is the teacher her master and Jason had begun to follow, the man from Nazareth that some call the Son of God . . .
Born free, made a slave, married out of her bonds, Abigail never knows freedom until she feels the fire of a stray drop of blood from a Jewish carpenter. Disowned by Israel, despised by Rome, desired by all, she never knows love until she receives the smile of a stoic Roman noble.
If you have don’t have a Kindle, you can also find the paperback version on Amazon for $15.00.

Change the World: Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus’ target=_blank>Change the World: Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus’ target=_blank>Change the World: Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus’ target=_blank>Change the World:  Recovering the Message and Mission of Jesus sounds like it’s going to be a really good book.  I know, as believers, our desire should be to change the world.

Product Description:

Something is not working. Despite the church’s place of prominence in American culture and the ubiquity of the church in every American town, misconceptions about the faith of Jesus Christ run rampant today. Christians are known more for exclusivity than for love, more for potlucks than for solving world hunger.

It’s time for churches to get over the cruise-ship mentality of being a program provider, and reconnect with the true message and mission of Jesus: to bring good news to the poor, release to the captives, and freedom to the oppressed.

Pastor Mike Slaughter challenges church leaders to look at the future of their congregations and make tough but necessary choices.

  • Will you send the church out into the world?
  • Will you focus on building disciples or tallying decisions?
  • Will you multiply your impact or expand your facilities?
  • Will you step out in courage or comply with the status quo?

The answers to these and other questions determine how your church will focus its time, its energy, and its budget to work for real change in a hurting world.
